Introduction, Week 1

Hello,

My name is JD Weidman, and I am a senior chemical engineering student at OU. I feel like I should not put a ton of information on the internet, but I am sure you could find this out on Facebook and twitter. I am a member of Brothers Under Christ (BYX) and I actively attend Summit Church in Newcastle. As far as hobbies or free time, I do not have a ton of time for either. Chemical engineering gets pretty hard sometimes, and with BYX and my small groups, when I have free time I just want to be really lazy and not do anything. When I want to have fun, I go two stepping with a group of friends who I have always gone dancing with since freshman year. Second semester freshman year, we went almost every single Thursday night. The owner and the bodyguard actually know who we are and sometimes let us do free things like ride the mechanical bull as much as we wanted. Not exactly the coolest thing to do, but we are really good at two stepping now. Plus, it has some of the best people watching I have ever seen. So, besides that, for fun, I really like building a fire and eating smores in my backyard with my roommates, seeing movies at the Warren, and reading. As far as reading goes, I usually binge read while all school breaks when I have time. Harry Potter were my first books to read when I was little. I still like mystery books like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Jack Reacher series. Though, I do not mind reading things that are pretty much complete garbage but still mildly entertaining, like all the Mortal Instruments books. So, I like to think being open to the crappy stuff and saying that qualifies me as cultured.

This picture is of me in front of 221b Baker Street in London. I have also read the first volume of the Tales of Sherlock Holmes. The photo was taken on my camera and taken by Armando Melendez.

  1. Hi JD! I feel lucky to be getting people who grew up on Harry Potter in these classes... talk about a way to fire up people's imaginations! I'm not so worried about culture high or low, but I sure enjoy exploring creativity. It's just full of surprises! I hope the creative stuff in this class can be a good counterpoint to chemical engineering, which is definitely a different world (my husband was a chemistry major in college).

Don't forget to include a picture - you can edit this post to add an image and image info, no problem! And I hope you will enjoy the class!

  2. Being a science major myself, I understand your pain when it comes to being busy with classes and other activities. I can also say that when I do have time for myself I sometimes enjoy sitting around, doing absolutely nothing. I haven't gone two stepping before, but I did read all the Harry Potter books growing up. That's one thing I wish I had time for nowadays, but I'm unfortunately one of those who once I start a book I have to read it all the way until the end. Have a great semester!

  3. JD! I am so excited that we are in this class together. I think it is so cool that even you are a chemical engineering major, you are taking this class. Your introduction was very informative, as I learned things about you that I didn't even know (and we've known each other for three years now!). I had no idea that you liked two-stepping so much. That is a really unique hobby and I think it is awesome that you and your close friends found something different to do. It also doesn't surprise me that you made friends with body guard! I also loved to see the picture of you on Baker Street. I remember you were so excited to be there so seeing a picture of it was great. I hope you have an awesome semester (even with your hard classes)...you deserve it!

  4. Hey JD, nice to meet you! I've only been two-stepping once, but I thought it was a lot of fun and a pretty good workout too. I can definitely understand how you and your friends bonded over it and with the body guard because the dance world in general is so friendly. I, too, grew up on the Harry Potter books, and I think it's so cool that you got to visit 221b Baker Street!

  5. Hey JD, it is interesting to see another Engineering major in this class. It is definitely far different from most of our other coursework! That is so cool that you got to go to London and stopped by Baker Street. I recently found the BBC Sherlock series and found it to be excellent. I also love to go two stepping, but my favorite place in the Oklahoma City area is definitely Cowboys.

  6. First off, can you bring me and my friends to two-stepping? kind of joking but not really... I actually just had a discussion with them about wanting to try it out haha. I'm just like you, sometimes I'm just so busy that on my off days I just want to lay around and eat ice cream and not socialize with anyone. Keep me updated on that two-stepping!!! Have a great day!

  7. It's nice to meet you JD! Thank you for sharing a few things about yourself, it was fun to read! I can definitely relate to wanting to simply relax and be lazy in your free time, from working to school any kind of free time I try to read or watch a movie! My friends and I also love to go two stepping, it's so much fun and a great stress-reliever! I have also been to London myself, I hope you enjoyed the beautiful city as much a I did! Anyways, good luck with chemical engineering, I know it's an extremely tough major!

  8. Hi JD!
Wow what a tough major! It takes a person with quite a brain to stick with that and it seems like you got what it takes! I am an IAS major and the homework load of that doesn't leave room for free time for me either, so I completely relate to not having time for a hobby! It's cool you enjoy reading so much; I wish I had the attention span for that. Congrats on making it to senior year and good luck!

  9. Hi JD, I enjoyed reading your introduction and getting know a little about you. I am also a senior and I am a small group leader through Wildwood Community Church! I know a lot of BYX guys and I am a supporter of small groups for sure! I am from texas and I have always been a two stepper also. It is so much fun to go with a group of friends and two step all night. You are definitely right about how great of people watching you can do when you go two stepping!

  10. Hey JD, Really cool major! Chemical Engineering seems like a tough one, but I hope you enjoy it! I really like two-stepping too! My friends and I like to go to Sooners in Moore and I love riding mechanical bulls. HAHA, lots of fun. Like others on here, I can totally relate to not having much time for anything in terms of hobbies... I usually leave that for summer, if I can. That is awesome that you were in front of 221b Baker! I love the Sherlock Series! I kinda want to go there now and visit!

Hope you have a great semester!

  11. Hey JD! So we've definitely met before, freshman, maybe sophomore year, but it's definitely been a while since I've seen you! Hope all is well! Great intro by the way! I love that you go two stepping, I absolutely love it too and and am dying to go to Cowboys sometime! Bonfires and s'mores are also the BEST. Great to learn a little more about you, and maybe I'll run into you out dancing sometime!

  12. Congrats on the hard-earned two-stepping skills. I love going two-stepping with my friends whenever I get the chance to, but, like you, I'm super busy so I don't get to go as much as I would like. Also, I think its awesome that your faith is so important to you. I'm sure BYX and small groups take up a ton of time, so its awesome to see where your priorities are. Good luck with the rest of your year man!

  13. Wow, with a major like chemical engineering, I don't blame you for not having time for hobbies. Sometimes do you feel like you're kind of missing out on college? I know a few of my friends that are engineer majors that feel that way! I also really like your taste in literature, we have very similar likings of books! Well it was nice to meet you, best of luck this semester and don't stress too much!

  14. JD,
I think we've had a few classes together before. I'm also a senior, and I was a chemical engineering major my first two years. I got as far as MoHeat, but then decided engineering wasn't what I wanted. I'm glad to see you have stuck it through and are nearly finished. I know that it was already getting tough before I switched, and that wasn't even the really hard stuff.

  15. JD,
I can see why you don't have much time for anything outside of your major and BYX, that doesn't sound like an easy major and my buddies who are in BYX are always busy doing something. I agree with you that sometimes you have to read books for entertainment that are usually garbage. Sure they aren't a masterpiece or have a deep, profound meaning but they usually are entertaining. My garbage read was always Eragon, its the most unoriginal story but it caught my attention. Good luck with your major these last couple semesters!

  16. Hey JD! I think it's funny that I have had the opportunity to read so much of your work so far this semester and yet it has taken me until today to read your introduction! I think that it is wonderful that you are a part of a strong church community during your time at OU. I attended Summit a few times my freshman year and really enjoyed it. I ended up finding my church family at First Presbyterian Church eventually though! Anyways, I hope your semester is going well and good luck with your engineering degree! I know that's not an easy ride!

  17. Hi, JD! Fun fact: I am technically your sister - that is, I'm a Phi Lamb! We have a lot in common it seems. I am also a science major (Biology) and am really involved in my church. It was cool to see that you really enjoy two-stepping - my friends and I went a few times last year (and I've been more times over the years) but I'm sad to say that I'm not very good! I wonder if I've ever run into you (assuming you were talking about Sooner Corral or Red Neck Yacht Club) and just didn't know it! Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  18. Well done, for reaching your senior year in chemical engineering. I too am an engineering major and can understand how hard it gets at time. By the way cool picture. I’ve been there a time or too. My wife is from London. My wife made me watch the harry potter series this summer for the first time. I couldn’t imagine reading it. Although she says it’s great. Good luck.
